Rahu — The Complete Profile

Among the nine planets used in astrology, seven are natural — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn — and these can be physically observed in the sky. Two planets are different in kind: Rahu and Ketu. They are shadow planets, imaginary points calculated from the geometry of the Moon's orbit around the earth, intersecting the apparent path of the Sun. Rahu is the north node, Ketu the south node. They sit always 180° apart and move in retrograde motion through the zodiac.

The label "shadow" carries technical weight. Rahu has no body that reflects sunlight — it is, literally, an absence in the sky. This single fact governs much of Rahu's symbolism. A planet without light cannot give life. It can only obscure, distort, or expand whatever is already there.

In the older Western traditions of astrology, Rahu and Ketu were often not used at all, precisely because they are not physical. Indian astrology kept them because the lunar nodes have observable effects in the visible world — eclipses occur exactly when the Sun, Moon, and a node align — and because their predictive accuracy in chart work is too consistent to ignore.

For the Cuspal Interlinks framework, Rahu and Ketu are treated equally to the seven natural planets. They take their place in the Vimshottari Dasha cycle (Rahu running 18 years, Ketu 7), they hold their three nakshatras each (Rahu rules Ardra, Swati, Shatabhisha), they serve as cuspal sub lords for houses, and they participate in star-sub interlinks like any other planet.

But their nature remains different. They are artificial. And in chart analysis, that single distinction explains almost everything else about how they behave.

The combinations are notable. Rahu shares Saturday with Saturn — and as the next section will show, this kinship is fundamental rather than ornamental. Rahu is the tamasic planet of inertia and concealment. Its taste is sour, its colour grey — the visible signs of unresolved, fermenting, half-decayed matter.

The single rule that explains most of Rahu's behaviour: artificial matter is always against natural matter, in all aspects.

Astrology divides the twelve houses into a natural-alive trikona (1, 5, 9) and an artificial axis (4, 8, 12). The 1-5-9 group represents living things — the self, creation through children, divine grace. The 4-8-12 group represents non-living, manufactured, concealed, or dissolving things — buildings, denial, loss.

Rahu is structurally aligned with the 4-8-12 axis because Rahu is itself artificial. This is why Rahu's interlinks with the alive trikona produce specific tensions, and why Rahu's interlinks with 4, 8, 12 produce the most damaging combinations — disease, addiction, refugee migration, mass loss. The artificial planet operating through the artificial houses compounds the tendency.

A useful framing from the source tradition: "Assume the nature as soul. Then the duty of artificial is to destroy the soul." Rahu is not evil in itself. But when the artificial expands beyond its bounds — when manufactured food replaces natural food, when constructed life replaces lived life, when synthetic intoxication replaces natural pleasure — the soul-quality of life suffers. Rahu's destructive expressions all share this signature.

Within its artificial nature, Rahu's specific operation is expansion. The character of Rahu is to make anything bigger, wider, huger, more immense. Whatever Rahu touches grows beyond its natural size.

This expansion principle accounts for many of Rahu's significations:

• Cancer — abnormal expansion of cells at one organ
• Bigger-than-normal organs — when Rahu is the Cuspal Sub Lord of a house, that body region becomes larger than normal (Rahu as 2nd CSL = bigger nose, eyes, teeth)
• Multiple deaths — Saturn's single death expanded to mass casualty events
• Foreign expansion — life expanded beyond native borders
• Wide utensils — even kitchen objects under Rahu's domain take wider forms
• Demons (asuras) — supernatural beings of grand, exaggerated, distorted form
• Immensity — anything described as "huge" or "vast" carries Rahu's signature

This contrasts directly with Ketu, the south node, whose principle is the opposite — contraction, shrinking, making things small. Rahu and Ketu together form the pair of expansion and contraction, the diametric extremes of the artificial axis.

Beyond expansion, Rahu carries a deeper karaka: breach of convention. To breach is to break or violate. Convention means the established cultural pattern — the way things have always been done, the inherited custom, the traditional norm.

Rahu opposes convention. Wherever Rahu engages strongly with a house, the karakas of that house tend to be expressed in ways that depart from tradition.

The clearest illustration is foreign settlement. When a person leaves their home country and moves to another, almost everything about their life changes:

• The language spoken changes
• The food eaten changes
• The dress code changes
• The climate forces adaptation
• The religious environment shifts
• The social customs differ
• Even daily rhythms change

Each of these is a breach of the original convention. The native who remains in their birth culture follows the inherited pattern; the native who emigrates necessarily breaks it. This is why Rahu is the foreign planet — not because of any inherent connection to geography, but because going abroad is the practical embodiment of breaking convention.

The same principle extends to other Rahu domains

• Other religions — adopting a faith different from the native's birth tradition
• Other castes / communities — relationships and associations across traditional social boundaries
• Unconventional career paths — aerospace, alternative medicine, foreign service
• Anti-establishment behaviour — rebellion against existing authority
• Taboo-attraction — drawn toward what tradition forbids

Whenever a chart shows a native breaking the inherited pattern of their family, culture, or society, Rahu is usually involved.

Rahu and Saturn share much of their territory. Most of Rahu's karakas are similar to Saturn's karakas, but expressed at greater scale. The relationship is one of agency: Rahu acts as the agent of Saturn at mass scale.

This pattern repeats across virtually every domain. Whatever Saturn does in singular or individual form, Rahu does in grand or mass form. The Dasa periods reflect this kinship — Saturn runs 19 years, Rahu runs 18 years, the closest pair in the entire Vimshottari cycle.

The practical implication is that Rahu Dasa often resembles a Saturn Dasa in theme but at greater intensity and broader reach. A native running Saturn Dasa might face one personal setback; the same native running Rahu Dasa might face a setback that affects many people around them. The signature is similar; the magnitude differs.

Of Rahu's many roles, two stand above the rest as the most consistently invoked in chart analysis:

Foreign Karaka

Rahu is the main planet (graha karaka) for foreign matters — travel abroad, settlement abroad, foreign employment, international business, immigration, anything that involves crossing national borders. Paired with the 9th house (bhava karaka of long-distance and foreign), Rahu decides whether the foreign dimension activates in a chart.

For foreign success, Rahu must connect with the 3rd, 9th, or 12th house — the three foreign-related houses. The connections can be through Rahu serving as the Cuspal Sub Lord of any of these houses, or through Rahu appearing as the star lord, sub lord, or sub-sub lord in the cuspal positions of these houses. This will be developed in detail in its own article.

Cancer Karaka

Rahu is the primary disease karaka for cancer. Roughly 85% of cancer cases follow Rahu's pattern — localised tumour at one specific organ, identifiable by pain or change of shape at that location. The remaining 15% follow Ketu's pattern — spread cancer throughout the body, blood cancer, identifiable only at a matured stage.

The cancer combination requires Rahu to be connected with 4, 8, or 12, and typically to be the Cuspal Sub Lord of the affected organ's house. This will be developed in the cancer-focused article in this series.

Body Parts

Lungs (Rahu = expansion; lungs expand and contract continuously), breathing system, skin (external surface), abnormal growths (tumours, warts, cysts, birthmarks, moles), inflammations due to allergy, blood pressure regulation, stammering and speech impediments, left hand, feet (numbness), toxin accumulation areas. When Rahu is the CSL of any specific house, that house's organ becomes larger than normal — without disease, simply larger; with disease (when also connected 6, 8, 12), tumour-prone.

Attributes and Mind

Demons, devils, immensity, abnormal growth, infertility (shadow planet = no light = no creation), converting natural mind to furious or haughty state, breach of convention, unconventional ambition, deception, hypnotic influence, addictive personality, foreign-orientation, attraction to taboos, manipulation, political cunning, eccentric or revolutionary tendencies.

Relations

Ancestors of father, grandfather. People of other communities, religions, countries, castes. Foreigners, smugglers, drug dealers, spies, diplomats, magicians, hypnotists, politicians (cunning type), underground network figures.

Foods

Bengal gram (primary), all artificial foods (anything against nature), all liquors, toxins, drugs, fermented foods, foreign or exotic cuisine, processed foods, MSG-heavy preparations, street food (mass-prepared), chemical preservatives. Wide utensils.

Places

Foreign countries, embassies, international airports, seaports, nuclear plants, chemical factories, large prisons, deep mines, underground tunnels, snake pits, isolation hospital wards, casinos, international stock exchanges, drug dens.

A specific consequence of Rahu's artificial-food karaka deserves early mention because it appears in many chart analyses: Rahu is the karaka for all liquors, drugs, and addictive substances. When Rahu is connected with 6, 8, or 12 in a chart, particularly during Rahu's Dasa, the risk of addiction increases significantly.

The most damaging combination involves three planets together:

• Jupiter (liver karaka) connected 6, 8, 12
• Rahu (artificial food / alcohol karaka) connected 6, 8, 12
• Ketu (chemical processing in the body) connected 6, 8, 12

When all three are damaged simultaneously, the alcohol-to-liver-failure pathway is structurally enabled. Rahu Dasa typically initiates the addiction; Jupiter Dasa later delivers the liver consequences. This pattern, well-documented in case studies, will be examined in its own article.

Rahu rules three nakshatras — Ardra, Swati, and Shatabhisha — and runs an 18-year Vimshottari Dasa, the second longest after Venus. In the Vimshottari sequence, Rahu sits between Mars (7 years, action and aggression) and Jupiter (16 years, fortune and dharma).

A Rahu Dasa typically activates whatever themes Rahu carries in the specific chart. Foreign migration commonly happens during Rahu Dasa for natives whose chart supports it. Career shifts toward unconventional or international fields are common. Sudden expansions — business growth, unexpected gains, new opportunities — appear during this period. So do the difficult themes when Rahu is damaged: addiction onset, cancer risk activation, refugee-style displacement, mass-loss situations.

The 18-year duration means Rahu Dasa often defines an entire phase of life. Whatever Rahu has been holding in the chart, the Dasa brings to the surface — for better or worse, depending on the interlinks.

When in doubt about Rahu in a chart, the diagnostic question is always the same: Is this planet connected with the alive trikona of 1, 5, 9, with the supportive group 3, 7, 11, with the material trikona 2, 6, 10, or with the artificial axis of 4, 8, 12? The answer to that single question reveals most of what needs to be known.

Rahu is rarely neutral. Wherever it touches the chart, life takes on the character of expansion and breach. Whether that character serves the native or harms them is the question every chart must answer for itself.
