Ketu — The Complete Profile

Among the nine planets used in astrology, seven are natural — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn — and two are different in kind. Rahu and Ketu are shadow planets, imaginary points calculated from the geometry of the Moon's orbit intersecting the apparent path of the Sun. Rahu is the north node; Ketu is the south node. They sit always 180° apart, move in retrograde motion through the zodiac, and exist as mathematical positions rather than visible objects.

The "shadow" label carries technical weight. Ketu has no body that reflects sunlight. Like Rahu, it is literally an absence in the sky — a point where the lunar plane crosses the ecliptic, nothing more. This single fact governs much of Ketu's symbolism. A planet that gives no light cannot give life. The structural principle: shadow planet = no light = no life. Hence Ketu's connection with infertility, fetus loss, demolition, and the dissolving themes generally.

In the Cuspal Interlinks framework, Ketu is treated equally to the seven natural planets. It takes its place in the Vimshottari Dasha cycle (running 7 years, identical to Mars), it holds three nakshatras (Ashwini, Magha, Mula), it serves as Cuspal Sub Lord for houses, and it participates in star-sub interlinks like any other planet.

But its nature remains different. It is artificial. And in chart analysis, that single distinction — combined with its specific contraction principle — explains almost everything else about how it behaves.

The combinations are notable. Ketu shares Tuesday with Mars — and as the next section will show, this kinship is structural rather than ornamental. Ketu's primary food is horse gram, often consumed in restricted quantities, which fits its general contraction principle.

The 15-mark health weightage places Ketu third behind Sun (50 marks for soul/brain) and Moon (35 marks for body/blood), completing the primary 100-mark health trio. Ketu's role in this trio is as the chemical processor — the planet that determines whether the body's biochemistry runs cleanly or develops disorders.

The single rule that explains most of Ketu's behaviour, like Rahu's: artificial matter is always against natural matter, in all aspects.

Astrology divides the twelve houses into a natural-alive trikona (1, 5, 9) and an artificial axis (4, 8, 12). The 1-5-9 group represents living things — the self, creation through children, divine grace. The 4-8-12 group represents non-living, manufactured, concealed, or dissolving things — buildings, denial, loss.

Ketu, like Rahu, is structurally aligned with the 4-8-12 axis because Ketu is itself artificial. This is why Ketu's interlinks with the alive trikona produce specific tensions, and why Ketu's interlinks with 4, 8, 12 produce the most damaging combinations — cancer, fetus loss, organ deformation, addiction-pathway support.

But within the artificial dimension, Rahu and Ketu operate in opposite directions. Rahu expands the artificial outward to mass scale. Ketu contracts the artificial inward to subtle, hidden, or specialised forms. Together they cover both poles of the artificial axis — the broad expanding pole and the narrow contracting pole.

Within its artificial nature, Ketu's specific operation is contraction. The character of Ketu is to make anything smaller, narrower, or broken. Whatever Ketu touches reduces, separates, or breaks down.

The contraction principle accounts for many of Ketu's significations:

• Smaller-than-normal organs — when Ketu is the Cuspal Sub Lord of any house, that body region becomes smaller than normal (Ketu as 2nd CSL = smaller nose, smaller eyes, smaller teeth)
• Spread cancer (15% pattern) — cell mutation that breaks across the body rather than localising
• Demolition — physical or structural breakdown of established forms
• Amputation — removal of body parts, the surgical extreme of organ shrinkage
• Deformation — alteration of natural shape
• Disconnection — severing of relationships, ties, attachments
• Self-control — reduction of ego, the constructive form of contraction
• Enlightenment — the ultimate contraction, where personal will dissolves into recognition that "all things are with God"

The contraction principle is morally neutral. Applied to ego, it produces wisdom. Applied to disease, it produces cancer or organ failure. Applied to relationships, it produces separation. Applied to attachment itself, it produces freedom from attachment. The same fundamental operation manifests as either liberation or destruction depending on what Ketu is contracting and through which interlinks it operates.

This is the key reading principle. The same Ketu placement can support either spiritual development or physical disease, depending entirely on the interlinks. Ketu connected with 5, 9, 12 in inner-biased mode supports contemplative life. Ketu connected with 4, 8, 12 in damage mode supports cancer development. Same planet; opposite outcomes.

Rahu and Ketu together form the snake. Rahu is the head; Ketu is the tail. The symbolism encodes their respective natures.

Rahu (head): the visible, threatening, attention-grabbing part. Where the snake strikes from. Immensity, prominence, arrogance, outward grandeur. "Look at me" energy.

Ketu (tail): the hidden, almost-invisible part. Where the snake's balance and direction come from. Smallness, subtlety, self-control, inward refinement. "All things are with God" recognition — surrender of personal grandeur.

This is why Ketu carries the spiritual karaka of enlightenment (Gnana karaka) — the wise sages who live in self-control, who have relieved themselves from worldly pleasures, who recognise that all things rest with the divine rather than with personal will. The tail of the snake, almost invisible but providing balance, becomes the natural symbol for the enlightened mind that has made itself small in the worldly sense to become large in the spiritual sense.

The same symbolic logic produces Ketu's negative manifestations. The hidden tail can also be the secret weapon — the unseen attack, the conspiracy operating below the surface, the chemical poisoning that leaves no obvious trace. When Ketu's "secret" karaka turns malefic, it produces what cannot be detected in time to prevent.

Ketu and Mars share much of their territory. Most of Ketu's karakas are similar to Mars's karakas, but expressed at greater scale or in elevated form. The relationship is one of agency: Ketu acts as the agent of Mars at mass or specialised scale.

The practical implication is that a Ketu Dasa often resembles a Mars Dasa in theme but with different texture. A Mars Dasa brings active conflict, surgery, accidents, sharp action. A Ketu Dasa brings the same themes through different channels — chemical changes rather than surgical, secret events rather than open conflict, breaking and ending rather than fighting and conquering.

Of Ketu's many roles, two stand above the rest as the most consistently invoked in chart analysis:

Medicine and Body Chemistry

Ketu is the karaka for medicine itself. All medicines are chemical compounds; Ketu governs all chemistry within the body. Pharmaceutical work, drug compounds, digestive efficiency, acid secretion, chemical reactions throughout the body — all fall under Ketu directly. Spiritual Enlightenment

Ketu is the karaka of enlightenment — the gnana karaka. The contraction principle applied to ego produces the spiritual realisation that ends seeking. Sannyasa, moksha, contemplative practice, the inner sage tradition all involve Ketu's territory. This is the planet's most significant inner-biased role and will be developed in its own article.

The two domains operate at opposite ends of Ketu's spectrum. Medicine and body chemistry is Ketu's outer-material expression — chemical work, disease analysis, pharmaceutical career. Enlightenment is Ketu's inner-spiritual expression — wisdom development, renunciation, liberation. Both flow from the same contraction principle applied through different chart configurations.

Body Parts

Acids in the body (especially HCl in stomach), small intestine (the long narrow tube), big intestine, all chemical reactions in the body, digestive efficiency, energy conversion processes. When Ketu is the CSL of any specific house, that house's organ becomes smaller than normal — without disease, simply smaller; with disease (when also connected 6, 8, 12), prone to deformation or amputation.

Attributes and Mind

Detached, renounced, ascetic, introspective, meditative, psychic/intuitive, mystical, occult-oriented, secretive, sharp/penetrating insight (laser-like rather than broad), research-oriented (deep), karmic awareness, past-life connections. Negative expressions: paranoid (when afflicted), confused, absent-minded, self-destructive (when severely afflicted).

Relations

Ancestors of mother, maternal grandmother, maternal grandfather. Ascetics, sages, philosophers, occult practitioners. People who have left worldly life. Note the contrast with Rahu — Rahu represents paternal-line ancestors, Ketu represents maternal-line ancestors. The two shadow planets divide the ancestral territory between them.

Foods

Horse gram (primary), adulterated foods (chemicals added to natural food for preservation), seasoned foods (chemical seasonings), all chemical substances (petrol, diesel, kerosene, LPG gas). Ketu's foods tend toward the chemical-processed end of the spectrum.

Ketu's Vimshottari Dasa runs for 7 years — the shortest Dasa among the longer-period planets, identical to Mars. Within the Vimshottari sequence (Ketu → Venus → Sun → Moon → Mars → Rahu → Jupiter → Saturn → Mercury), Ketu opens the cycle. Natives born when the Moon is in any of Ketu's three nakshatras (Ashwini, Magha, Mula) start life in Ketu Dasa.

A Ketu Dasa typically activates whatever themes Ketu carries in the specific chart. Spiritual breakthroughs commonly happen during Ketu Dasa for natives whose chart supports it. Chemical or medical changes (digestive shifts, medication needs, chronic-disease activation) are common. Demolition events — career endings, relationship endings, life-structure dismantling — appear during this period when Ketu is connected with damaging interlinks. Sudden short events characterise the Dasa — the 7-year window is intense but contained.

The 7-year duration means Ketu Dasa is shorter than most major Dasas. The events tend to be sharp rather than sustained. Whatever Ketu has been holding latently in the chart comes to expression intensely within this relatively brief window.

A specific observation worth noting up front: in many charts, Ketu produces effects that are weaker than other planets, even though Ketu is technically a malefic.

The reason is structural. Ketu's effects scale dramatically based on its position in the chart hierarchy:

• Ketu as Sub-Sub Lord — second; meaningful effects
• Ketu as Star Lord — third; effects present but moderated

The analogy from the source tradition: concentrated HCl vs diluted HCl. Ketu in CSL position is concentrated — the full chemical reaction. Ketu merely placed somewhere is diluted — minimal effect on the surroundings.

This dilution effect explains why some natives experience Ketu Dasa as relatively quiet while others experience it as dramatic. The intensity depends on whether Ketu holds significant CSL/SSL/Star Lord positions in the chart, or whether it sits in houses without taking these governing roles. The same Ketu Dasa, run by two different natives, can produce 5% activity for one and 100% activity for the other.

The answer to that single question reveals most of what needs to be known.

Ketu is rarely the loudest planet in a chart, but its quiet influence often shapes the deepest dimensions of a life. Whether the contraction principle serves the native through spiritual development or harms them through chemical disease and demolition is the question every chart must answer for itself.
