Vāstu - The Unit Ladder, and the Two Joints in It

Vāstu measures with a set of units that runs from the width of a barley grain to a day's journey. They are usually presented as a neat eightfold ladder, each unit eight of the one below it. That presentation is tidy, useful, and not quite true — and the places where it stops being true are the interesting part.

The ladder as it is taught

Modern teaching material sets the units out in pairs, each pair indexed to the job it does:

Every ratio in that table checks out arithmetically. And the eightfold step is independently attested: Vāstu Cintāmaṇi gives eight yava to the aṅgula, Bhavan Bhāskar gives twenty-four aṅgula to the hasta and twelve to the vitastā. The tradition really does count in eights.

But it is not one chain

Reduce everything to aṅgula and the underlying structure is not a single geometric progression:

Vitasti at twelve aṅgula, Parva at three and Hasta at twenty-four sit off the chain entirely.

The table gets its uniform 8:1 appearance by pairing units that happen to be eight apart, not by describing an eightfold metrology. That is a legitimate way to present a set of working measures. It is not a description of the system's structure, and reading it as one will mislead anyone trying to convert between distant units.

The two joints, and what they are for

The two irregular steps are not defects. They are the seams where the system stops being a mathematical progression and starts being a set of tools.

The ×1.5 at Vyāma → Daṇḍa is the seam between body measure and land measure. Below it, everything derives from a person — the finger, the palm, the forearm, the armspan. Above it, everything is a surveyor's measure. The two families were never one family, and the joint is where they were fastened together.

The ×1000 at Rajju → Yojana is the seam between land measure and travel measure, and it produces the familiar figures: one yojana of 8,000 daṇḍa, one krośa of 2,000, four krośa to the yojana. Those numbers are usually attributed to the Arthaśāstra's dhanus-based system. That attribution has not been verified against a text this project holds, and should be checked before anyone cites it.

The bottom of the ladder is a tolerance

The tila at 0.47 mm is reached by halving the yava three times, and it is glossed as the thickness of a chisel line in joinery.

That is not a dimension. Nobody specifies a component 0.47 mm long. It is the finest distinction a tool can make, which makes it a statement about achievable precision rather than about size.

A metrology whose floor is set by the width of the cut a chisel makes was written by people who were building, not by people who were theorising about number. It is one of the clearest signals in the whole system that its authors worked with their hands.

Choose the unit to fit the job

The Vāsturatnākara states the selection rule directly: measure a town or a city site by daṇḍa, a house or temple or tank by hasta, a seat by aṅgula. Choose the unit by the size of the ground.

This is exactly what drawing scale does in modern practice — a site plan at 1:1000, a general arrangement at 1:100, a joinery detail at 1:5. The intent is identical: keep the number of significant figures matched to the precision the work can actually hold.

The mechanism differs, and the difference has a consequence. Modern practice keeps one unit and changes the scale of the representation. Classical practice keeps one representation and changes the unit.

The classical arrangement has a property the modern one lacks. Because the unit changes with the task, a dimension carries its own scale information. A figure in aṅgula announces that it is joinery; a figure in daṇḍa announces that it is land. There is no possibility of the 1:100 error — reading a detail at site-plan scale — which remains one of the more common and expensive failures in contemporary drawing sets.

Two things not established

Whether the task-indexed ladder as presented above is attested in any classical text is an open question. The selection rule is; the eightfold pairs are; the specific eight-row table indexing eight units to eight design tasks is a modern arrangement of classical material until someone shows otherwise. The likeliest place to test it is the Samarāṅgaṇasūtradhāra's measurement chapter. That check has not been done.

And every centimetre figure in the first table is a modern reconstruction. The units are relative — the hasta is the owner's hasta — so 72 cm is a reasonable central value and not a definition. The ratios are the durable part. The metric equivalents are a convenience.

Ratios in the first table were recomputed and are exact. Metric values are reconstructions and are labelled as such.
