Vāstu - Whose Body Is the Metre?

A metre is the distance light travels in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second. It is the same length for everyone who has ever used it, and that is the entire point of it. Universality is what makes a drawing transferable, a component interchangeable and a building code enforceable.

The Vāstu hasta is not like that. It is measured on a particular person, and the śāstra is specific about which one.

The hand the building is measured with

The Vāsturatnākara gives the rule plainly. The measure is taken with the hand of the house-lord — the man the house is being built for. Failing him, the hand of his eldest wife, then his eldest son, then the craftsman. For a temple, only the craftsman's hand is used, and no substitution is offered.

The measurement itself is prescribed as tightly as the choice of hand:

  • The hasta is measured to the ring-finger, and equals one fifth of the height of the raised arm.
  • It is never taken to the index or the middle finger.

That last line is worth pausing on. It is a negative instruction, which means it is correcting something people were actually doing. A rule that forbids a specific error is evidence of the error.

Three grades of finger

The aṅgula is graded too. The three-fold mātrāṅgula runs uttama at eight barley grains, madhyama at seven, adhama at six — best, middling and least.

The consequence is easy to state and hard to absorb: the same nominal dimension in aṅgula produces three different physical buildings, depending on which grade is in force. A wall of ninety-six aṅgula is not a length. It is a length once you know whose aṅgula, and of which grade.

What this makes a drawing

A classical Vāstu specification is therefore not dimensioned in absolute length at all. It is dimensioned in a modulus tied to one named person.

Two houses built to identical nominal figures, for two different owners, are two different buildings — different in real, measurable, tape-measure length. Neither is a copy of the other, and neither is wrong. The building is a scaled portrait of the man who will live in it, and the scale factor is his own forearm.

Modern architecture has a shadow of this idea. Neufert's anthropometric tables and Le Corbusier's Modulor both derive dimensions from a human figure. But in every modern case the human module is a statistical abstraction — fixed once, published, and thereafter treated as absolute. Nobody re-derives the Modulor for each client. The classical system does exactly that, and treats the re-derivation as the point rather than as an inconvenience.

Which is better is the wrong question

It is tempting to read the relative hasta as primitive, a stage on the road to a proper standard. That reading misses what it is for.

A universal unit is what you need when the drawing must travel — to a factory, a supplier, an inspector, another continent. A relative unit is what you need when the building is for one household and will be built on site by the people who measured it. The two systems optimise for different things, and the classical one is not failing at universality; it is not attempting it.

The cost is real, though, and it should be named. A relative unit cannot be checked by a third party. There is no way to audit a building against a specification when the specification's unit walked off site with the owner.

An unresolved figure

This project holds three different values for the human module and they do not reconcile as stated:

Almost certainly there are two or three different aṅgula in play here — a fixed architectural mānāṅgula against a proportional dehalabdhāṅgula derived from the figure being drawn. That is the likeliest explanation and it is not a confirmed one.

What propagates the confusion is that the modern source states 64 with no qualifier at all, as though it were the number. It is not the number; it is one number, in one system, and reading it as universal is precisely the mistake this whole article is about.

Recorded as unresolved. A figure that appears three ways in three places is not settled by choosing the one you saw first.

Classical rules above are from the Vāsturatnākara's measurement chapter. The three-fold aṅgula is standard across the tradition. The reconciliation of the three module values has not been made and is not asserted here.
