One Person, One Day: A Complete Pancha Pakshi Reading
Everything else in this collection describes the system. This entry shows one.
Below is a complete Pancha Pakshi day for a single person: all fifty windows, sunrise to sunrise, with real clock times. The subject is a Crow native. The place is Mumbai. The date is Friday 17 August 2007, in the waxing half of the lunar month. Sunrise was at 06:24:02, sunset at 19:01:21, and the following sunrise at 06:24:17.
We did not invent this day. It appears as worked output in one of the published sources. But rather than transcribe it, we rebuilt it from the rules set out earlier in this collection — the activity cycles, the paksha direction, the sub-slot proportions, the multiplication — and then compared the two line by line.
All fifty windows agree. Same bird, same activity, same strength, start times within three seconds. Everything below is therefore both a published reading and an independently reconstructed one. A third check came later: the engine behind our own panchang app, decoded separately again, returns the same activity for all fifty.
The spine of the day
Daylight and darkness are each cut into five blocks. This person’s own bird moves through all five activities in each.
| Block | Times | The Crow is | Length |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 06:24 – 08:56 | Dying | 2h 31m |
| 2 | 08:56 – 11:27 | Eating | 2h 31m |
| 3 | 11:27 – 13:58 | Walking | 2h 31m |
| 4 | 13:58 – 16:30 | Ruling | 2h 31m |
| 5 | 16:30 – 19:01 | Sleeping | 2h 31m |
| 6 | 19:01 – 21:18 | Walking | 2h 17m |
| 7 | 21:18 – 23:35 | Sleeping | 2h 17m |
| 8 | 23:35 – 01:51 | Eating | 2h 17m |
| 9 | 01:51 – 04:08 | Ruling | 2h 17m |
| 10 | 04:08 – 06:24 | Dying | 2h 17m |
Daylight ran 12h 37m and darkness 11h 23m, so the daytime blocks are the longer ones. The bird governing the day as a whole was the Cock and the day’s dying bird was the Owl — neither of them this person’s own, so no segment-wide overlay applied. This is the ordinary case.
Two different things are called “ruling” in this material, and it is worth separating them here. The governing bird of the day is one bird for the whole segment, fixed by the weekday and the paksha. Ruling is also the name of the strongest of the five activities, and a different bird holds it in each block — on this Friday the Vulture in block 1, the Peacock in block 2, the Cock in block 3, the Crow in block 4, the Owl in block 5. The Cock governs the day; the Crow rules the fourth block. Both sentences are true.
The ten windows that were his
Inside each block, five short stretches pass in turn to the five birds. The subject’s own stretches are the ten below.
| Time | Length | Activity | Strength | Rating | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 06:24:02 | 12m 37s | Dying | 0.045 | Worst |
| 2 | 08:55:30 | 31m 33s | Eating | 0.720 | Average |
| 3 | 11:26:58 | 37m 52s | Walking | 0.405 | Inadequate |
| 4 | 13:58:25 | 50m 29s | Ruling | 1.125 | Excellent |
| 5 | 16:29:53 | 18m 56s | Sleeping | 0.180 | Worst |
| 6 | 19:01:21 | 28m 27s | Walking | 0.315 | Poor |
| 7 | 21:17:56 | 22m 46s | Sleeping | 0.140 | Worst |
| 8 | 23:34:31 | 28m 27s | Eating | 0.560 | Average |
| 9 | 01:51:07 | 22m 46s | Ruling | 0.875 | Fair |
| 10 | 04:07:42 | 34m 09s | Dying | 0.035 | Worst |
Walking the day
The day opened at the floor. The first twelve minutes and thirty-seven seconds after sunrise were this person’s own bird dying inside its own dying block: 0.045, the second lowest figure of the entire twenty-four hours. Whatever he did before 06:37 that morning, the system says he should not have.
The first two and a half hours barely improved. Four of the five windows in block 1 are rated Worst. The exception is a fifty-minute stretch from 07:46 when the Vulture ruled — and because the Vulture is a Crow’s enemy in the waxing half, and because his own bird was dying throughout, he drew only 0.225 from it. Somebody else in that room had an excellent three-quarters of an hour. He did not.
Things lifted at 08:56, to 0.720, Average, for half an hour. That is the best the morning offered.
The joint second-best window of the day arrived at 10:05 and lasted fifty minutes: 0.900, Fair. It belonged to the Peacock, an enemy. Strength and comfort are not the same quantity, and this table makes the point twice.
13:58:25. Fifty minutes and twenty-nine seconds, 1.125, Excellent — the only window rated Excellent in the entire day. One window out of fifty. If anything mattered on that Friday, it belonged here.
The afternoon held up through a second 0.900 at 15:20, then fell away. From 16:30 the Crow entered its sleeping block and four of the next five windows are Poor or Worst.
Night brought no peak at all. The best window between sunset and sunrise came at 01:51 and ran twenty-two minutes: 0.875, Fair. That is the same ruling-inside-ruling combination that scored Excellent at two in the afternoon, now less than half as long and two grades lower.
04:07:42 was the floor of the day. 0.035, thirty-four minutes — nearly three times the length of the equivalent daytime trough. And it did not stand alone. The final block ran five consecutive windows, two hours and sixteen minutes, every one of them rated Worst.
Taken together with the poor start, this person had a stretch from 04:08 to 08:56 — four hours and forty-eight minutes — containing ten windows, of which nine are Worst and one is Poor.
What the tally says
| Rating | Daylight | Night | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Excellent | 1 | 0 | 1 |
| Fair | 2 | 1 | 3 |
| Average | 3 | 3 | 6 |
| Inadequate | 5 | 4 | 9 |
| Poor | 6 | 7 | 13 |
| Worst | 8 | 10 | 18 |
Thirty-six per cent of the day is graded Worst. Two per cent is graded Excellent.
This is worth sitting with, because it corrects the usual impression of the system. Pancha Pakshi is not a promise of good hours. It is mostly a map of hours in which you should not be doing anything that matters, with a small number of exceptions marked clearly.
The night carries no Excellent window and ten of the eighteen Worst ones. The asymmetry we described structurally elsewhere in this collection is visible here in one person’s Friday.
Two honest notes
The night’s peak is graded oddly, and we can now say by how much. Windows 4 and 9 are arithmetically the same combination — the bird ruling, in its own stretch. One is graded Excellent at 1.125, the other Fair at 0.875. Checking all fifty rows against the rule gives a clean answer: every daylight window is the plain product multiplied by nine-eighths, and every night window by seven-eighths. Fifty rows out of fifty. What the sources never explain is why the day should carry a bonus and the night a penalty on top of an arithmetic that already shortens the night’s good windows and lengthens its bad ones. The factor is exact; the reasoning for it is still missing.
This is one person. A Vulture on the same date in the same city had a completely different day — his peak fell in the first block, between 06:24 and 07:15, while the Crow was at his lowest. Nothing in this table generalises to anybody who does not share the Crow. Reading two birds at once sets out the whole grid for this Friday and what can honestly be said about a second person.
What he should have done
Anything that mattered: 13:58 to 14:49.
Second choices: 10:05 to 10:55, or 15:20 to 15:52.
Nothing of consequence before 08:56. Nothing at all between 04:08 and 06:24. And the message that arrived at 06:30 should have been answered after 08:56.
Your own day
The fifty-window resolution above is a reconstruction from published tables, and this collection is where it lives. What you can carry around is the layer above it: your bird, and the ten blocks it moves through between one sunrise and the next.
That is what Navashi computes. Give it your birth details once and it fixes your bird from your birth nakshatra and birth paksha; after that it draws the ten blocks for any date and any place, with their clock times and whether each is a stretch to act in, to be careful in, or to leave alone. It is the spine table at the top of this entry, for you, for tomorrow.
