The Phrases You'll Actually Hear

The most frequently used verb in the entire tradition, and the one most often misheard as ordinary English.

To enjoy a house's significations means the native personally receives the benefit of them. It is a separate question from whether the house is active. A house can be strong, connected, and delivering — and the native still not enjoy what it produces, because enjoyment is measured against the Ascendant, not against the house.

This is why a chart can show money arriving and a life that does not feel prosperous. The house performs; the person does not receive. Whenever you hear that a native “will not enjoy” something, this is the distinction being drawn.

A statement of position, made from a house rather than from the Ascendant.

When you hear that the eighth stands as the second to the seventh, it means: counting from the seventh house, the eighth occupies the second position. The eighth is therefore acting as the seventh's money-and-sustenance house, not as the eighth house of the chart.

This is how every house acquires a second identity, and a third, and a twelfth — one for each house you might count from. Half of what sounds mysterious in this method is simply a house being named from an unfamiliar starting point. Counting From a House sets out what each of those positions does.

A house is spoiled when it is connected with the house standing at its own twelfth position — the house immediately before it. The result is not weakening. It is failure: the house loses its significations entirely and does not activate.

The pattern is worth memorising because it recurs everywhere:

• The seventh spoiled by the sixth — marriage becomes divorce
• The sixth spoiled by the fifth — employment becomes no employment
• The fifth spoiled by the fourth — progeny becomes infertility

Note that the same logic operates on paired houses too. Wherever you hear that a bhava “is spoiled,” the twelfth-position connection is what is being described.

The signature of the eighth position, and a word with no everyday equivalent.

When a house is connected with the house standing at its eighth, it does not stop working. It works in reverse. The house abandons the target it was meant to reach and moves along an adverse or opposite path instead, still active, still producing — just producing the wrong thing.

The source literature illustrates it with disease. If the sixth house carries germs and the Ascendant carries immunity, then germs entering the body under a counterpace connection will not do the duty they entered to do. They arrive, and they fail at their own purpose.

This is why a connection to the eighth is a matter of denial and reversal, never of delay. Delay belongs to the sixth. The eighth turns things around.

Describes what actually travels along a connection between two houses.

When one house is connected with another, the first house's significations are converted into the second house's material. They do not sit side by side; the one becomes the raw substance of the other.

So when the fifth is connected with the eighth, the fifth's significations — love, children, speculation, commission — convert into eighth-house results. Worry arrives through love. Loss arrives through speculation. The eighth does not manufacture its results from nothing; it manufactures them out of whatever house feeds it.

Asks whether a connection grows the house it started from, or merely spends it.

When a house is connected with another of the same nature, the transfer returns and compounds — the source house develops. When the connection crosses to the opposite nature, the significations are still transferred, but nothing comes back. The house has been spent rather than grown.

You will hear this as a verdict on its own: “the tenth is developing”, “it is developing the fourth house also.” The question being answered is not whether something happens, but whether it accumulates.

Belongs to timing rather than structure, and it means one specific thing: to pick up an event and carry it through to completion inside one's own span.

The word exists to explain why the middle level of a running period holds the authority. A long period is too broad to be responsible for any single event — it sets a theme. A short one lacks the duration to see anything finished. Only the level in between has enough time to take over an event and complete it, which is why judgements land there.

The same reasoning applies to a cusp's three lords, and it is the reason the cuspal sub lord outranks the other two.

Describes how far into a period a result actually runs.

Some connections activate and hold to the close. Others activate and then lose strength partway — thirty per cent of the way, or seventy, depending on the position involved — after which the matter stops progressing even though the period continues.

So when you hear that something activates till the end, a specific claim is being made: this result does not fade mid-period. And when you hear that a lord “loses strength immediately after activation,” the claim is the opposite — the matter appears, then collapses, and something else carries the remainder of the period.

Every phrase here answers a different question, and confusing them collapses distinctions the method depends on.

Spoiled asks whether a house works at all. Counterpace asks which direction it works in. Develops asks whether it accumulates. Enjoy asks whether the native ever receives the result. Takes over and activates till the end ask when, and for how long.

A house can be undamaged, active, developing, and still produce nothing the native enjoys. Another can be spoiled outright while its neighbour prospers on the significations it lost. Reading this system well is largely a matter of keeping these questions separate — and the vocabulary exists precisely because they are separate.
