The Threat from Goliath
The Philistines, enemies of Israel, gathered their armies to fight King Saul and the Israelites. From the Philistine camp came a terrifying warrior named Goliath of Gath—a giant nearly 10 feet tall, covered in heavy armor, and carrying a massive spear.
Each day for forty days, Goliath stepped forward and challenged the Israelites, shouting:
"Choose a man and have him come down to me... If he is able to fight and kill me, we will become your subjects." (1 Samuel 17:8-9)
But no one in Israel dared to face him—not even King Saul.
David Steps Forward
David was a young shepherd boy, the youngest of eight sons. He wasn’t a soldier; he was sent by his father to bring food to his brothers at the battlefield.
When he heard Goliath's insults and saw Israel’s fear, David was shocked:
“Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?” (1 Samuel 17:26)
Though just a boy, David volunteered to fight Goliath. He had no armor, no sword—but he had faith in God.
He told Saul:
“The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.” (1 Samuel 17:37)
The Battle Begins
Saul reluctantly agreed and tried to give David his armor—but it was too big and heavy. David chose instead to take his shepherd’s staff, a sling, and five smooth stones from a nearby stream.
As he approached the battlefield, Goliath laughed in disbelief:
“Am I a dog, that you come at me with sticks?” (1 Samuel 17:43)
David answered with bold faith:
“You come against me with sword and spear, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty... the battle is the Lord’s!” (1 Samuel 17:45-47)
Victory with a Single Stone
David ran toward Goliath, put a stone in his sling, and hurled it with precision. The stone struck Goliath in the forehead, and the giant fell face down to the ground.
David ran over, took Goliath’s own sword, and cut off his head.
The Philistines fled in terror, and the Israelites chased them down in victory.
