The story of Daniel in the Lion’s Den, found in Daniel 6, is a powerful testament to courage, integrity, and the unwavering power of faith in God. Even when threatened with death, Daniel stayed true to his beliefs—and God honored his faithfulness with a miraculous deliverance.
This story continues to inspire those facing injustice, fear, or persecution to remain faithful, no matter the cost.
Daniel’s Rise in the Kingdom
Daniel, a Hebrew exile in Babylon, had already proven himself to be wise, honest, and favored by God. Under King Darius of Persia, Daniel was promoted to one of the highest positions in the empire, overseeing administrators and governors.
He was so capable and trustworthy that the king planned to make him ruler over the whole kingdom. This made the other officials jealous.
They wanted to bring Daniel down—but there was nothing corrupt or careless in him to expose.
“They could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent.” (Daniel 6:4)
A Trap of Faith
Knowing Daniel was deeply devoted to his God, the officials crafted a clever trap. They convinced King Darius to sign a law stating that no one could pray to any god or man except the king for thirty days—or be thrown into the lions’ den.
Daniel heard about the decree—but did not change his habits.
“He went home... and prayed three times a day, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before.” (Daniel 6:10)
When the officials caught him praying, they rushed to tell the king. Though Darius was distressed, the law could not be reversed.
Thrown into the Lion’s Den
Reluctantly, the king ordered Daniel to be thrown into the den of lions. Before sealing the stone, he said:
“May your God, whom you serve continually, rescue you!” (Daniel 6:16)
That night, King Darius couldn’t eat or sleep. At dawn, he hurried to the den and called out:
“Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God been able to rescue you from the lions?” (Daniel 6:20)
To his joy, Daniel answered:
“My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight.” (Daniel 6:22)
A King’s Decree and Justice Delivered
Daniel was lifted out unharmed, and the king was amazed. He then ordered the accusers—along with their families—thrown into the den. This time, the lions devoured them before they even reached the ground.
King Darius then made a decree throughout his kingdom:
“For He is the living God and He endures forever... He rescues and He saves; He performs signs and wonders in the heavens and on the earth. He has rescued Daniel from the power of the lions.” (Daniel 6:26–27)
